A cat owner who shared how her pets reacted to pills prescribed by their vet before a long journey has left viewers in stitches this week.
In a now-viral TikTok video with more than 5 million views, Jo Snyman—who uses the TikTok handle vivienne131313—shared how ginger cats Finnick and Peeta responded to the medication.
Snyman shared the video and said: “The vet prescribed meds for an 8hr car trip, she told me to do a trial run so I know what to expect…”
In the video, one of the ginger cats is laid back on the couch, eyes closed and incredibly laid-back. The other kitty stares into the distance while occasionally stretching out his paws, although he apparently isn’t sure they belong to him.
In a later comment, Snyman explained: “[The] vet prescribed trazodone for everyone wondering—and it did the trick, now we’ll see how the road trip goes next week.”
Trazodone is an antidepressant part of a class of medications called serotonin modulators. In humans, it is used to treat major depressive disorder, anxiety disorders, and difficulties with sleep. In cats, it is sometimes prescribed as a single dose to help with anxiety.
In a 2016 study published by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), researchers reported the results of an experiment that tested 10 healthy cats with a history of anxiety during transport or veterinary examination. Randomly assigned either a dose of trazodone or a placebo, each cat was then placed in a carrier and transported by car to a veterinary clinic for an examination.
The results found that the cats who had been administered a single dose of trazodone prior to their trip showed fewer signs of anxiety.
It is important to only give your pet medication as prescribed and directed by a veterinary professional.
TikTok users were left in stitches at the video and headed to the comments to share their thoughts.
“They are absolutely lost in the sauce,” joked one commenter. While another viewer said: “Cat on the right can taste colors.”
“When you realize you have paws,” said another comment. “He was like ‘I got a niiiiccceeeeee paaaawww,'” wrote another.
One TikTok user joked that the pair were: “CATatonic.”
One viewer wrote: “One already landed in space and the other is planning to build a rocket.” While another viewer joked: “It’s like your very own Cheech and Chong.”
The cats’ doting owner clarified that the felines were both happy and safe, and also explained that the small prescribed dose lasted for around nine hours.
“I love high pets,” said one user. Another commenter wrote: “Lmao this is so good.”
“They are going to be begging for car rides after this trip,” joked one TikToker.
